Bangladesh to protect Yamuna dolphinsBangladesh - Fresh water dolphins have slowly but surely disappeared from the rivers of Bangladesh in the past decade due to mangrove deforestation and toxic contamination of its rivers. The government is making efforts to save the dolphins with funds from the United Nations Development Fund and support from the IUCN. It has undertaken a project near the Yamuna river to create public awareness about the importance of saving the Shushuks. International conservation groups - Whale and Dolphin Conservation Soceity (WDCS) and Conservation Society (WCS) and The World Conservation Union (IUCN) undertook a study on the viability of creating dolphin sanctuaries in a few of Bangladesh's rivers and are yet to present their recommendations to the government. |
