Canada, U.S. to regulate emissions of heavy vehicles

Canada and the United States will work together to slash greenhouse gas emissions by regulating emissions from heavy-duty vehicles, Environment Minister Jim Prentice announced Friday.

The North American regulations - which in Canada will fall under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act - would see standards established for heavy-duty vehicles to go along with existing rules on passenger vehicles and light trucks.

"The transportation sector, in its entirety, is responsible for 27% of Canada's greenhouse gas emissions and that's why in the time after (the climate summit in) Copenhagen, we have focused initially on the transportation emissions because they are the largest source of emissions in Canada," Mr. Prentice told reporters.

Government intends to work with the automotive industry and drivers to help develop the regulations, with a first draft - intended for consultation use by the public and industry representatives - expected this fall. Final regulations are scheduled for implementation for heavy-duty vehicles as early as the 2014 model year.
