City moves to protect green spaces

Montreal, Quebec - The City of Montreal has set aside $36 million over the next three years for a proposal that would protect 10 areas, called eco-territories, that are considered to be of great ecological value.

They include Mount Royal, the Senneville Woods and the Lachine Rapids.

Alan DeSousa, the executive committee member responsible for sustainable development, said the city won't prevent construction in these areas but will use methods, such as land swapping and zoning changes, to persuade landowners and developers to minimize development.
