EU Agrees Licensing Plan to Combat Illegal Logging |
Luxembourg - EU agriculture ministers endorsed plans on Monday to crack down on the lucrative illegal timber trade by making exporters obtain licences to prove their wood does not come from endangered rainforests, officials said.
"There is a lot of concern about the use of illegally harvested timber. This sets up a licensing system for countries with which the EU has a partnership," one EU diplomat said.
"It will identify timber that is legally harvested. It's not a 100 percent solution but it's a step forward," she said. q
