EU bans grizzly bear trophies

Washington D.C. - image The European Union has suspended imports of grizzly bear hunting trophies from the Canadian province of British Columbia, amid North American conservation group calls for a wider ban.

Despite their vulnerable status and listing in the US Endangered Species Act, over 200 Canadian grizzlies are legally killed every year through sport hunting.

The EU’s decision is based on the findings of an Independent Scientific Panel, which recommended a no-hunting reserve for grizzly bears in the BC region. As the provincial government has not acted on the recommendations, the ban has been implemented.
