First lady honors young Detroit poets

Detroit youth poets Myriha Burton and Lena Cintron flew to Washington, D.C., to meet first lady Michelle Obama at the White House to accept a national arts award on behalf of Citywide Poets, an after-school program in the Detroit.
A project of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, the Coming Up Taller Award honors programs that result in improved academic scores, enhanced life skills and positive relationships.
