Governor signs free-range egg bill into law
“By signing this bill, Governor Schwarzenegger has taken an important step in protecting animal welfare in a way that will also improve food safety for consumers across California,”
- Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law Tuesday a bill requiring eggs sold in the state be laid by hens that can turn around freely, lie down, stand up and fully extend their limbs. The new law goes into effect in Jan. 1, 2015.
With more that 19 million egg-laying hens statewide, California is the fifth-largest egg-producing state.
Supporters include the Sierra Club California, Planning and Conservation League and Center for Food Safety, among others.
