Karzai Signs Afghan Constitution, Launches New Era
Kabul, Afghanistan - Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Monday signed the nation's constitution into law, launching a formal, democratic state.
The document creates a two-chamber parliament and an independent judiciary. Human rights advocates praise the Afghan constitution for declaring men and women equal before the law.
Those words and the government's structure were ratified in early January after intense debate at a constitutional convention.
