Madagascan forests regenerate against expectations

Southern Madagascar - Sacred rites protecting "taboo" forest and unofficial land ownership agreements are helping regenerate large areas of tropical forest in southern Madagascar, say researchers.

... Focusing on the more recent years, they were surprised to find that the forest appears to be recovering -- total forest cover increased by 4% between 1993 and 2000.
