Monsanto gives up on bid for genetically engineered wheat

Toronto, Canada - Biotechnology giant Monsanto said Monday it shelved a bid to introduce genetically modified wheat, sparking jubilation among Canadian environmentalists.

US-based Monsanto said it was deferring all further efforts to introduce its Roundup Ready wheat after a review of its research portfolio and after consulting customers in the wheat industry.
