Ozone-Eater Molecule Caught in Action |
Boston, MA - The nasty little molecule that has long been suspected of assassinating ozone in the stratosphere has finally been caught red-handed, a collar that could lead to more accurate predictions of future ozone losses.
The "dimer" molecule known as Cl-O-O-Cl (a chlorine atom attached to a oxygen atom, attached to a oxygen atom, attached to a chlorine atom) has been found in the act of doing its infamous quick change, in which sunlight lets loose one or both of its bookend chlorine atoms to rip oxygen atoms from ozone (O3), and reduces them to plain old oxygen gas (O2).
