Pond scum yields potential weapon against Alzheimer’s
Switzerland - Pond scum might have health benefits. One of its components, cyanobacteria, is the source of a newly isolated compound that scientists say might combat Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases.
Researchers in Switzerland found the compound -- named nostocarboline -- is a potent inhibitor of cholinesterase, a brain chemical whose breakdown is linked to Alzheimer's progression.
