Sakhalin Energy puts off pipeline construction to preserve whales

Vladivostok, Russia - The Sakhalin Energy international group will put off construction of a pipeline to Russian Sakhalin island's coast for fear of further hazard to rare gray whales frequenting the area, the consortium said Wednesday.

The pipeline's construction would involve use of heavy-duty ships whose noise could seriously disturb the whales, the Sakhalin Energy's press service said.
