Scramjet smashes world speed record |
Los Angeles, California - A revolutionary jet engine flew faster than seven times the speed of sound in a high altitude test over the Pacific at the weekend, breaking the world speed record for an atmospheric engine.
NASA's pilotless research vehicle hit slightly more than Mach 7, about 8000 kilometres per hour, during 11 seconds of powered flight. It then glided at hypersonic speeds for several minutes before plunging into the ocean.
