Somalia heads for peace as leaders agree on new parliament
Nairobi, Kenya - A ray of peace in Somalia appeared Thursday as warring faction leaders and politicians signed an agreement here to establish a new national parliament that will inturn elect a national president.
The agreement, also called Transitional Federal Charter, came after more than a year of talks in Kenya aimed at ending the long-standing civil war in the Horn of Africa country.
Delegates at the signing ceremony, including major Somali warlords, representatives of the Transitional National Government (TNG) and others, hugged each other and described the move as a "breakthrough."
