Here is Time Magazine's list of the top 10 medical breakthroughs of 2011.

1. Scientists Use Cloning to Create Stem Cells

"The process is promising because it can potentially yield stem cells — which may one day treat diseases such as spinal cord injury and Parkinson's — that not only match their donor, but also obviate the need for an embryo."

2. A First-Ever Malaria Vaccine

3. HIV Treatment As Prevention

"The treatment of HIV has come a long way, thanks to antiretroviral (ARV) drugs that can lower levels of the virus in the body, keeping people healthy and reducing the risk of HIV transmission."

4. The Food Pyramid Becomes a Plate

"This year's update, released in January, urged people to eat less overall, and specifically recommended that they reduce added sugars, salt and fat; better balance the number of calories they eat with the amount they burn off; eat more vegetable and plant-based foods and seafood; and meet federal recommendations for physical exercise."

"Researchers at Uppsala University in Sweden reported in August that a simple blood test may be able to predict who is most likely to die of heart disease or cancer."
