US carmakers commit to biofuels

London - The "big three" US car manufacturers are to double their production of vehicles capable of running on renewable fuels by 2010

DaimlerChrysler, Ford and General Motors have committed to produce two million flexible fuel vehicles (FFVs) a year, by the end of the decade. Such vehicles are fuelled using biodiesel or E85 – a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. There are currently 5 million FFVs on the road, and the three companies will add another 1 million cars and trucks this year. Approximately 17 million cars and trucks were sold in the US in 2005.
