WHO misses HIV targets, but makes progress

Geneva, Switzerland - One million people in developing countries are now receiving antiretroviral drugs to combat HIV - more than double the 400,000 recipients in 2003.

The WHO is resigned to missing the target, but is upbeat about progress so far. "We've learned beyond any doubt that treatment in the developing world is feasible, effective and increasingly affordable," said Jim Yong Kim, director of WHO's HIV/AIDS department, at a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland, on Wednesday.
